Someone I know was out walking on the coastal path in the Land's End area over the weekend - you'd think that's a pretty safe activity. She had the excellent idea to break away from her friends and scramble along some boulders below the path. Of course she didn't really know where she was going and soon enough ended up doing an irreversible move. The only way out was through steep gorse and this proved impassable, so she got well and truly stuck.

Faced with such a predicament, whom would you call?

a) 999 and ask for mountain rescue or the coastguard
b) Your friends and ask for advice
c) 118118 and ask if they could put you through to someone who could help

That call must have entered the 118118 hall of fame...

The quick-witted operator put the hapless lass through to the coastguard control centre somewhere in South Wales, who arranged a helicopter rescue after some initial confusion where the victim couldn't work out why she was speaking to someone in Wales when she was actually in Cornwall.

Another call-out which was could have been avoided by applying a bit more common sense before launching out on an adventure...
