Here it is,

A revised version of the good old political compass.

This time, slightly less radical, with a number of more pertinent questions

http://politics.beasts.org/scripts/survey

I ended up with

Axis Position
1 left/right +1.7081 (+0.1028)
2 pragmatism +2.0727 (+0.1248)

Puts me just to the right of centre and on the pragmatic side, rather than the idealistic

What are you????
In reply to rusty_nails: I'm just above horizontal line on the pragmatic side but leaning to the left

1) coordinates.

Axis Position
1 left/right -3.3111 (-0.1993)
2 pragmatism +1.5851 (+0.0954)
In reply to rusty_nails: In between Charles Kennedy and Tony Blair, woo hoo!

Although I'm not suprised to find myself on the left I'm suprised to be so pragmatic.

The problem with surveys like that is the answer so many times would be 'well it depends'.

-7 and +2 sounds about right.....but that means I'm Charles Kennedy...how depressing!!!!

2 pragmatism +4.3459 (+0.2616)

Occupying a dead spot well away from politicians

Not really surprised at where I ended up, but as always with these tests I did find the questioning framework rather restrictive. I mean call me indecisive but permanently ruling out an activity seems a bit futile so you end up giving lots of middle ground answers. Now if they had 'definitely agree but obviously we'd allow some sort of exception in the right circumstances' then I'd be happier.

Nearer to Kennedy than Blair, and more pragmatic than Benn or Livinstone. Just about where I would want to be, I reckon!

It is frustrating that so often you want to say "well it depends". There are many questions to which I'd like to answer "in principle I would not rule that out as a means to creating a more just society but I would certainly not suggest it in our current UK situation" but such surveys don't allow for such subtlety.... Interesting that there seems to be such a lack of variation on the pragmatic/idealistic axis
 Doug 20 Aug 2009
In reply to rusty_nails: On the horizontal line and a bit to the left. I found the questions frustrating, giving many 'no opinions' when I really wanted to say something like 'it depends...'

So far most of those who have taken it seem to be leaning to the left and pragmatic.

Any raving left idealists about? Jonno, Al Evans????

Slightly left of Tony Blair. I was expecting slightly more central than that, but I'm not really surprised.

If you think I should have been further right, I didn't like the questions on inequality-it asked if there would be more twice, but only whether it was important once...

No need for apologies. I wonder whether the results are indicative of a far more centralised idealogy within the political make-up of the populace. Or does climbing only attract a certain clientele. Or were the questions worded in such a way as to provide predominantly 'left' results.

Although have to say I would have imagined you to be more right than that. You've gone up in my esteem.

Are you getting bored? You should get into management like me.

 Nic 20 Aug 2009
I am, disappointingly, still to the left of Joe Stalin (although only just!)
 Reach>Talent 20 Aug 2009
In reply to gourd:
Your perceptions of peoples political beliefs based on discussions via UKC are likely to be rather skewed. For instance despite the fact that in any discussion involving Comrade Evans I come across as being slightly right of Gengis Khan I'm actually fairly politically central. Debates particularly in situations where you can't observe subtleties of tone of voice or body language do tend to end up rather polar.

In reply to rusty_nails:

Pretty far left, slightly more so than Kennedy. Just over the edge into idealism too, but still fairly close to pragmatic.

I think that sums me up pretty well.

you got me, I'm really Tony Blair posting under an alias!

Somehow I always feel pretty disappointed to end up in the middle on stuff like this, but dunno where that comes from. Think it's my desire to be non conformist and cool.
ah well <sigh>

Also closer to Stalin than the others. I'm surprised it's pretty much dead centre though, I'd have thought it would have put me slightly further right.

Ditto, I thought I'd be further to the right (and I imagine UKC would think I am to)

I think I'm probably quite ideologically closer to Tony Blair "Nu-Labour" than Tory deep down. I have a sense of social responsibility but don't believe that the world owes people a living (~As I'm seeing on Channel 4 now)

perfect balance of pragmatism and idealism and right over on the left with ken Livingstone and Tony Benn (2 of my heroes) quite happy with the results and not suprised.

Me mid left of centre. Interesting the relative positions of Thatcher and Hitler.....

left/right -3.0621 (-0.1843)
pragmatism +1.6086 (+0.0968)

I'm on line on the horizontal with Charles Kennedy, and a bit to the left of centre.

Agree that some of the answers need a 'it depends' button or something similar, not 'no opinion.'
cragtaff 23 Aug 2009
In reply to rusty_nails: I suspect the results tell us more about the person who constructed it than about the participants. Obviously they want Blair to be seen as moderate and centre, and wants Hitler and Thatcher perceived as on a par. Ridiculous!

Now, if he had Blair and Stalin on a par I could go with that!
