Surprised no ones mentioned the recent death of Charles Houston, best known for his part in an epic retreat from high on K2 in 1953

I was fortunate to meet him when he gave a talk at Bretton Hall about 10 years ago. He was exactly as you say, a really charming old guy.

I heard him give an after dinner speech at the CC centenary - He showed loads of footage of his exploits with Tilman & Odell on Nanda Devi,as well as K2. An amazing life, lived to the max.

His biography, 'Brotherhood of the Rope' is a fine read. He does come come across as an outstanding person.
