Do climbing films often appear repetitive – the usual suspects on the latest E10? If so then a new film “LINES OF FLIGHT”, which is premiering at KENDAL 2009, offers a different, more contemplative cultural experience.

Invoking the connection between industrial towns and the barren wilderness of the Pennines through visual imagery and poetry, “LINES OF FLIGHT” celebrates the adventure and sheer joy of escaping the go-faster world through the immersive practice of solo rock climbing.

The film was produced and directed by northerners SAL BROWN and MARTIN WOOD and filmed and edited by RICHARD HEAP over the summer of 2009. It features poetry by WORDSWORTH, LAWRENCE and MANLY HOPKINS, comment from ANDY CAVE, ANDREW POPP and GRAHAM HOEY, the voice of SAMUEL WEST, together with some enticing solo ascents of a chosen miscellany of iconic gritstone routes, including: THE FILE (VS), FLYING BUTTRESS DIRECT (HVS), WESTERN FRONT (E3), DEMON RIB (E4), and WELLINGTON CRACK (E4)
