Why won't TV or the Olympics ever cover climbing? Because it looks boring to others. So I propose that we start up performance climbing groups everywhere to make climbing look more dynamic and exciting. Interesting clothes. Interesting visual moves. Add some circus stuff and TV will love it. How about someone doing Has Britain Got Talent? "Our next contestant is Bob & Jen from Manor House who will climb to the music of Swan Lake."
This is exactly what others have done in other areas.
Who's up for it? How about climbing centres starting with a fun & funky climbing night. Climb in fancy dress? How about syncronised climbing (worked for swimmers)?

Yep - you have answered you own question. Well done.

there was a brief moment some may remember;

barcelona olympics, climbing was an exhibition sport on a huge outdoor wall with a big pastel coloured overhang.

it what must have been a lull between sprinting, swimming and high diving there was quick flash to what may have been the mens climbing finals.
and there, in technicolour glory was wolfgang gullich doing a one finger pull up over the overhang, footage taken from above to show the height, the grunt and the intensity.

gullich, all lycra, chalk, headband and handlebar mustache cemented climbing into the 80s collective memory for about 10 seconds and then was gone.
who gives a shit about punks in the gym when you could have that.

the olympics finished, the image faded, gullich was killed and that was the end of that.

the problem is not with the climbing its with the sponsors. cricket, baseball and motor racing is infinitely more dull - but also infinitely more energy is put into making it interesting.
costumes wont sell it - dazzling locations, papparazzi, italian marketing and spraying cheerleaders with big bottles of champagne will.

Climbing cheerleaders? Every wall should have some.

fancy dress climbing has been around for decades, my old club had a theme each and every trip usually focusing on a decade and you had to dress up in that theme - great fun! but wouldnt sell climbing

and would you really want it to be an olympic sport? prices on an already expensive hobby would go up, the busy crags would get busier causing queues with numpties who dont know what they're doing so would have more accidents, insurance price would go up

nah keep it as it is - unless we are allowed a annual yearly "cull" of numpties and ban tham from climbing for life!
