Does anyone know of any climbing in north Germany? I'd be grateful for any information on anything that could be reached without too much of a detour while driving from Berlin to the Netherlands.

Cheers,
Mark

In reply to mark@apeindex.com: I don't know about the north of Germany, but if you have the time and you've never been there the detour to Freyr, near Dinant in the south of Belgium would be well worth while. If you do go remember to take a card showing you are either a BMC member or a member of an affiliated club.

Only cliffs I saw in a week on the Baltic coast (plus journey from/to Berlin) were some impressive chalk sea cliffs on the island of Rugen. Guess if Dover & Hastings are climbable they would be as well, but it was in a National Park and the wardens may have other ideas.

In reply to mark@apeindex.com: There is the "Weser-Leine-Bergland" which is known for good climbing options. The "Ith" is the best area westerly of the "Harz". 3-4 hours driving from Berlin on the road to the Netherlands.

In reply to mark@apeindex.com: There used to be a fantastic wall in Berlin, but the authorities knocked it down a few years back.

Olaf,
Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know where I can find further information on climbing at the Ith?

John2,
Freyr's a bit far off route but thanks.

Doug,
Let's put that one on the back burner for now, eh?

BrianT,
Made me laugh, which is very welcome on a day as dull in the office and as glorious outside as today has been.

Thanks all,
Mark

Visited Hamlyn a few months ago & the good climbing in the Hertz mountains to the west. Not alot else. Bouldered on some sandstone round there & there is some granite too. Bit of a pig to climb tho!

In reply to mark@apeindex.com: Hi Mark,
Try http://see.you.at/igith It´s of course in German. In "Gebietsinfo" are some informations about the possibilities for climbing and a little map with an overview. The best cliffs are in Lürdissen and Holzen I think. There is another site http://www.derklemmkeil.de/ in German and English. Next to the Lürdisser Klippen is a little campground of the German Alpin Club. I don`t know how long do you want to stay there but you could make some copies from the guidebooks in the offices of the German Alpin Clubs in Berlin. Hope this helps.
