'AN OUTSIDER ON EVEREST'

Jan Morris CBE will give the Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Lecture, at the Royal Geographical Society on Thursday 27th May 2010 at 7pm.
As The Times Special Correspondent, Jan was assigned to cover the 1953 Everest expedition led by John Hunt and became the most famous newspaper journalist in Britain.
Years later, at a meeting of representatives of the British Book World at Buckingham Palace, Jan met the Queen again: 'Do you remember when Everest was climbed for the first time, and the news came to you on the day before your coronation?'
'Yes, of course I remember' the Queen replied, to what she obviously thought was a foolish question. 'I was the person who brought the news back from Everest so that it got to you on time.'
It was not quite so simple as that. The expedition became shrouded in coded messages, a certain amount of bribery was required and, for the then James Morris, there was a desire to be accepted by the members of the expedition.
This lecture promises to be one of the most entertaining and humorous that we will have the opportunity to witness - a chance not to be missed.

Special guests will be Bhim Bogati & Sherap Sherpa of REED Nepal who will be visiting the UK for the first time and will describe their work as Teacher Trainers for The Himalayan Trust in the remote areas around Everest and Kangchenjunga and hopefully showing some great photographs to illustrate their talk.

The proceedings will be Chaired by George Band OBE, who, at 23 years old, was the youngest member of the Everest expedition with Thanks by Rebecca Stephens MBE, the first British women to climb to the summit of the highest mountain in the world.
