A dreadful accident happened about a week ago in Turkey with Zalia, a daughter of Salavat Rakhmetov, famous boulderer, he won the World Championship 2005 in Munich at the age of 38. You may have heard about him.

Salavat lead a pitch, his wife belayed, when a huge block of rock fell down directly on to their 5 year old daughter, she's still unconsciousness, in intensive care in a Turkish hospital, she has pulled through four surgeries (amputation of a hand, sewed big toe on a leg, stuck in the spokes of a broken arm and a leg).

But she needs one more major operation - damaged crashed skull fragments and stuck in her brain.

Doctors are waiting for the swelling of the brain to reduce to allow the operation for removing these fragments.

The problem is that her medical insurance expires tomorrow, and she's still not transportable because of the injuries.

Hospitalization can last from two weeks to a month. And the cost (w/o surgeries) will be approximately $74,000.
Rent of a special aircraft for the transportation of Zalia home is about $49,000.
In total she needs $123,000.

If she's alive.

So let's try to co-ordinate and to find money for Zalia. It is not so easy.
But all our children grow up near the cliffs.

The data for Western Union (currency account maybe later)

Is it possible to set up a just giving page for these guys? It will make it a bit easier for people to donate (thus hopefully leading to more donations)

Thanks Jack.

Let's get this done!
Tragic but why on earth do people take young kids to crags and leave them unattended? Smacks of irresponsible and selfish parenting to be honest. It's like leaving them unattended at a race track or in a supermarket car park.

In any case you're wrong according to http://www.rockclimbing.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2341656;

Kostik states:
Here is an update. Zalia's brain swelling is receding. She moved her fingers and attempted to open her eyes. The good news is that apparently there are no bone fragments in the brain, only swelling. She is in one of the best hospitals in Turkey. Since human brain swells during plane liftoff and landing, she cannot be transported anywhere at least for several weeks.

This is how it happened. Salavat Rakhmetov, was climbing with three friends. His wife Guzel and daughter Zalia were playing in some distance away from the wall. Salavat was taking down the draws from a very easy warm-up route, like 5.8, when a huge chunk of rock he was holding, almost the size of Salavat himself, broke off the wall and fell down on a tree, which was growing from the wall. The tree sprang and tossed the rock right on Zalia, who was perhaps the farthest of all from the wall.

As of today, approximately $75,000 has been donated, of which ~$9,000 came via PayPal from Western climbers and non-climbers. About $45-50,000 is still needed.

Salavat and Guzel want to thank everyone who support them in fight for their daughter's life.

I guess, I am taking this accident too close because of my own 7 y.o. daughter who loves climbing. There are so many dangers at the crag for little kids. Rockfalls, snakes, you name it. "

Hope you've donated.

In reply to Jack Geldard - Editor - UKC: It is a real shame that a child has had to endure amputation, surely when a child is so young is amputation really the answer.

Of course I don't know the severity of the child's injuries and one can only hope that she pulls through. I feel age is on her side, best wishes to the family.

If only you'd let the doctors know beforehand. Maybe the alternative didn't occur to them.

Thank you very much for your support!"
