My right walking boot has strung a leak (7 year old asolos that should have been looked after a little better). I reckon the goretex lining has gone.

I was thinking about a goretex pair of socks to plug the need, given I'm probably going to get by on ordinary cragging until cash finds me again, but with a couple of North Wales trips in wet/winter.

Are they any good? Am I deluding myself? Do I really need a new pair of boots?

Not sure about Goretex socks, but I use sealskinz and they are brilliant. My Nepal Extremes started leaking badly a couple of years ago, and rather than fork out £280 for a new pair, I bought the socks for £25 and haven't looked back. I can't recommend them enough.
In reply to nick ingram: I have used goretex socks for years as a backup when using light not watertight shoes or boots. They work all right, but the drawback is that at the end of the day you will have a pair of soaking wet shoes/boots. I prefer goretex boots.
