I went to climb The Haston Line on Mess of Pottage on Saturday. The route is III 4, but graded III 5 in lean conditions. There was plently of snow about but it was still mostly unconsolidated.
Everything was going well until the 2nd corner, which I think is supposed to be the crux. It was a real challange gaining the corner as the snow at the base was very loose. As I moved up it became very difficult to find any placements for my feet and I couldn't for the life of me get another good placement above with my axes because the ground was so heavily covered in unconsolidated snow so I couldn't find another solid hook above to make the moves over the corner.
My mate also had a go and gave it a good effort but found it equally difficult, reaching a very committing position out left on the corner before his axes pulled out and he took a good 10m fall before hitting the snowy slabs below. He was ok though.
We ended up abing off in defeat. I was wondering if anyone else has found this corner really difficult for the grade?
