Soft or hard shell - Alps

planning a trip to Ceillac in the south of France this January and was wondering if i should go for a soft or hardshell.

Any advice?

In reply to Seb Lee: Correct Both. I just got a decathlon bisonnay soft shell 50 quid and its brilliant. Couple this with a lightweight rain jacket, something that will take a bit of a beating not a super light weight one.

Ceillact in January? It is unlikely you'll get any rain. You might just get a bit wet from the actual ice.

Also, the air will most likely be dry so even a hardshell should be plenty breathable if you don't over-do the thermal layers.
