Hello all

Not the most exciting post, but important for some, especially if like me you have a young family. I've just sorted out life insurance (something a few years ago I never thought i'd do) and strongly urge you to consider using Summit Services to save you alot of cash.

They are recommended by the BMC and are awesome. I made the mistake of thinking I could save money by going direct and ended up going from an initial quote of £9ish/month to £55/month once they had taken into account my climbing. I only climb HVS/f6c/font 6c, and don't do any 'risky' soloing. I feel for you if you climb E grades and want cover...

Going through Summit I got great service, but even better the quote was recalulated based on the terms/knowledge/black magic that Summit, as a specialist, provide them (they actually asked me about my climbing and know what they are talking about) resulting in the quote coming back down to it's original level. result.

Try going direct if you want, but if you are going to be honest about your climbing don't say you weren't warned. Aviva wanted to charge me an extra £18000 over 25 years...

Funnily enough I'm insured with Aviva, and there was no premium uplift for climbing. I told them I did multipitch trad, leading up to VS, at altitudes below 2500m, with no soloing. It made virtually no difference to the quote - though I did go through a broker rather than direct.

In reply to Trigoc: So now you have your life insurance sorted, have you got a will done yet? Probably even more important now you have a family. The law works in bizarre ways when it comes to carving up your assets when you die, as we found out when we got ours done.

In reply to EeeByGum: That's next on this list. Sifting through the paper work, it looks like it'll be time consuming to say the least...

In reply to Trigoc:
Interesting - I got a quote from Zurich that went up fivefold when I told them about my climbing. I decided not to bother - but then I don't have kids, only a mortgage. The salesman didn't sound impressed when I said I'd 'live dangerously' and give it a miss.
