I've always been wary of being able to get hold of anything but CampingGaz in France, but it may have changed in recent years.

After mulling over the same decision a few years back I just stumped up for an MSR Whisperlite. They've definitely got petrol in France

In reply to ed34: I was in France for a month last summer, used the screw-on cartridges. It was always a mission finding them, and they were like 5-10 Euros a can. Think we used 5-7 cans, not entirely sure. Only used it for dinners.

Last time I was in France I camped for 2 weeks. Used an Omnifuel with petrol, total fuel cost was 1Euro 50. The last time was in Easter, so we used the stove for all dinners, some breakfasts and copious amounts of tea.

Whisperlite is a bit cheaper than the Omni, but still a very good stove. Stay away from gas; it is expensivo!

Whisperlite for 60 quid. Chances are it won't take long before you'd have spent more on gas!

I think if your in the mountains, eg chamonix valley you can get the screw on type quite easily but elsewhere they are almost impossible to find. Ended up buying a super cheap camping gaz stove on one trip as couldn't find th screw on type.
Also have taken a petrol one on other trips, but can be a bit of a hassle to clean if you want to fly with them.

In reply to ed34: I personaly wouldn't buy any "go system stoves" I have known too many to break.
The last thing you want at the end of the day is for your stove to stop working.

There is a famous brand of French outfitters called Decathlon, they have branches in the UK too.

The sell MSR screw tins - screw type is ridiculously easy to get.

Propane is also used for other uses, like blowtorches etc, in fact quite similar to we do in the UK, so you can get upright tins from DIY shops too.

In reply to ed34: I'd get a camping gaz. The last few times I've been to france it was really difficult to get hold of screw top canisters but easier to get hold of camping gaz canisters.
