Sounds like you've sprung a leak.

On a related note, I was told a couple of weeks ago that carrying a compass close to a mobile phone (as you might do in a rucksack) can cause the compass needle to demagnetise. Anyone had experience of that? Best check my compasses now before I forget.

In reply to lost1977: One tends to carry two Silva Type 4/54, having worn out a previous one in extremis. Good luck.

In reply to tony: Seem to recall there is a way of fixing it by stroking it with a magnet..have to do a search. Good luck.

In reply to stonemaster: Buy an HTC Desire HD. It has a compass AND a star map.

In reply to stonemaster: it's brilliant!!! Only one other person has ever got as excited as me about this app......... it was a complete stranger in a shop. She saw my model rocket and made a comment and I said 'if you like that, you'll love this...'

It's amazing. you point your phone and it tells you which star/planet/ISS/sun/moon is in that direction.

It actually works quite well. We used it last time we sailed to Ireland, though in truth, we were hoping to visit IOM, but it was a good trip nonetheless.

Could be their new sales pitch 'turns travel into an unexpected adventure'
I have been known to use Google maps for nav on the HTC desire, usually save the battery for using star maps at night, am yet to find anyone who doesn't find it amazing.

In reply to stonemaster: Star Maps, we need crag route maps.

To the OP, I dropped my Silva on concrete and it produced an air bubble, spoke to the shop where I bought it and they then spoke to the Silva rep who gave me a new replacement. Worth a shot.

If it's a Silva compass, and less than 5 years old, they will replace it for free. Phone them to talk about it
