better photos

how do i get better perspective?
i use a canon eos 300D with a 18-55mm lens, but when i view pictures on laptop all shots are shortened and people look fat. why is this?

First thought that springs to mind is that you're shooting from very low down or very high up.

The aspect ratio of your screen is different to that of the camera and the way you are displaying them on the PC is stretching them wider to fill the screen.
