Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience of using Phantom Guide boots with G14 crampons? Interested in knowing how well people think this combo fits. Interested in the G14 as a good all rounder.

Cheers

Gavin

In reply to gavinpeach: As far as sole coverage goes the g14s are good but the standard front wire bail is awefull on scarpas new soles( way too wide and if bent narrower the curly uppy bits foul on the sides of the boot. Replacing this with the bails of the g20s gives a pretty good fit on mine(size 46).

How do you rate the Phantom guides. Thinking of getting a pair for water ice 5~6.

In reply to Toby_W: Hi Toby, Taking them out for the first time this weekend; so I'll keep you posted. Fit really well and they feel very responsive, but I'll know more after the weekend. £299.99 at the outdoor shop, which seems a bargain compared to what they are going for elsewhere. http://www.theoutdoorshop.com/showPart.asp?part=PN70479

My feeling is that the Cramp-o-matic binding works well, but that with the New-matic or New Classic bindings the (relatively narrow) toe box sits too far forward and consequently doesn't give you enough frontpoint protrusion.

In reply to Andy_B39: Needle Sports seem to offer the same advice on their website. Cheers

In reply to gavinpeach: Anyone had any particular successful crampon combination with the guide boot? G14s are attractive as I'm keen on a good all rounder crampon but If anyone else has good alternatives I'd appreciate the info. Thanks

In reply to gavinpeach: I've got this pairing, and they seem to fit fine. No problem with the toes coming too far forward and covering the points. Climbed in the alps with them this summer and did a little drytooling with them and they feel precise and secure. I think i swapped the spacer bars over for a little extra length, but I can't really remember - I set the crampons with the easy spring bar and then bolted them to the right size once I was happy.

In reply to LJC: Thanks for the info. Really helpful to hear people's experiences with kit.

This was a recent thread about the Jorasses which has the same sole unit.

the G14 front bail is too high above the bottom of the sole to fit properly with the new phantom boots.

The phantom's toe profile so narrow that the front bail as to pivot forwards to fit and thus the sole of the boot must move forward anbd hover over the points.

If you look at the grivel g20 front bail you will notice that the distance between the crampon footbed and the top of the bail is about half the distance of the g14. The g20 fit well on my phantom 6000's. Alternatively you can buy this bail from needle sports as a spair part.

I now use two bails for winter alpine (one for my ski touring boots and one for my phantom 6000's).

I use the phantom guides and have struggled to get cyborgs to be a perfect fit, although i'm reasonably after a bit of fiddling now.

i've been reliably informed that the new BD stingers offer an excellent fit on the phantoms. but maybe there a little to specialist if your after a more general mountaineering crampon?

In reply to gavinpeach: My phantoms are size 43 and I've got newmatics which seem fine. Next time they are out I will have a look at the front protrusion, it's not something I have ever noticed. The assistant tried to sell me crap-o-matic G14s which didn't seem to fit at all.

In reply to tom290483: yeah, I'm more after a good all rounder. UKC review of the Phantom's seems to recommend BD Cyborg Pro's. Would you recommend the Cyborg's over the G14s? What problems did you have fitting them?
 LucaC 03 Jan 2012
In reply to gavinpeach: That was, of course, supposed to say cramp-o-matic. Freudian slip?

In reply to LJC: Ha, good to know. cheers
