Adding a strap to your rig .

Hi guys great forum and first rate advice
Is it safe to add a small sling from your harness to you figure 8 to keep the figure 8 out of the way for a younger climber whilst absailing
10 yr old .

In reply to Cal: Yes it's a good idea sometimes, either a larksfooted sling or an extender with a screwgate.

Yes. Guides often do this so that people don't trap their fingers in the device.
The downside is that if you need to do something, like push a rope kink through or pull a twig out, then you might not be able.

And keep their hair away from the belay device

In reply to Cal: Yes, be careful though as the Fig of 8 will be closer to someones hair which can get trapped in the device. So tie back hair very well.

Extending it out of reach could cause drama on overhangs.

Extending is a good idea though, as it removes the chance that your backup prussik will hit your abseiling device.
