For the past 48hrs one of the glands in my neck has been giving me grief. It is painful to touch the right side of my neck and really painfully to swallow; not a sore throat just I think the swallowing action is pressing into the gland from inside.

Apart from this I feel fine!

So, any amateur diagnosis/prescription??

In reply to kieran b: Any visible inflammation inside your throat you can see? Any other glands elsewhere swollen (no, not those. Near your armpits, say)? Temperature normal? Appetite ok? If there were a general election tomorrow would you vote Tory?

In reply to kieran b: If it is a mump make sure it doesnt travel "south" then you will be in real trouble.

In reply to kieran b: I had this a couple of weeks ago after a week of tooth ache. Went to the doctor who sent me to the medical triage up at the hospital for them to have a look. They then sent me to ENT who kindly stuck a camera up me nose and down me throat. They then got the max facial docs in to have a look. X-rays and ultra sound and bloods. Then after a whole day at the hospital was told......Probably that the gland was up because of a lingering infection from the toothache......take a course of antibiotics and go see the dentist. Was told also that a gland up in the neck is normally down to a localised issue because of gravity. Dentist sorted it after finding that a filling had come away from the tooth and said "ha ha ......should have come to me first."
Do go get it looked at though

In reply to shaggypops:
Hmm, exactly why I didn't want to go down the 'medical road'! Combined with the fact that I am not living in the first world.
I do have a good dentist though...maybe I will go see her
In reply to kieran b: Had a cold or a sore throat at all recently? Look up quinsy if so.

I had one once; very colourful too.

In reply to kieran b:

Yeah, do that. Can be caused by a painless abscess, I had one for a number of years and it caused all sorts of havoc.

Blimey. History of toothache, a bit of swelling in the draining lymph nodes and you end up having the whole works before someone comcludes the blindingly obvious!

In reply to kieran b:

could be tonsolitis. I had similar symptoms. wasn't sore normally but swallowing was sore. again only on one side

doc gave me a course of antibiotics for it

possible but not the most likely
