I am stuck on a question for my home paper for ML anyone out there help with the answers? I have answered a few but unsure they are correct.

What is the predominant rock type for the following areas?

Skye – Metamorphinc rock known as Lewisian gneiss
North York Moors – Ravenscar Sandstone
Snowdonia -
Cairngorms - Granite
Peak District - The North (Dark Peak) Gritstone, South (White Peak) Limestone
Lake District -

Cheers

In reply to themountaintamer: Skye has lots of different rock types, but if its for the ML I guess the answer is Gneiss & Basalt (Black Cuillin) & Granite (Red Cuillin) although there's also limestone & much more elsewhere on the island.

Snowdonia & the Lakes are both mostly volcanics from memory (eg Borrowdale volcanics in, er, Borrowdale)
In reply to Doug: Thanks thats what I thought too.

In reply to themountaintamer: Snowdonia has a lot of rhyolite. Also, you can't not put Gabbro down for Skye!

In reply to themountaintamer: wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_District

Look at section 3 'Geology'.

In reply to Doug:

Gneiss & Basalt (Black Cuillin) ???

In reply to JLS: an error, should obviously have been gabbro & basalt (the dykes). Not sure why I typed gneiss, old age arriving ?

In reply to themountaintamer: There are at least two significant limestone crags "in" The North Yorkshire Moors.

In reply to Mike Conlon: But I guess sandstone is predominant.

In reply to themountaintamer: They may want you to simply give the main type of rock in the simplest form of which there are only 3, then an example
So
Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic
therefore Lakes Volcanic eg Borrowdale Volcanic
North Yorks Moors Sedimentary eg Ravenscar Sandstone
as stated the areas mentioned often have multiple types of volcanic rock or mixes of the basic types
on my ML the home paper was used as a method of bringing out views and to give the assessor some idea that you know something (not everything) about the areas you would be doing ml work in.
Definately say Gabbro for the volcanic rock on Skye as someone else said tho
