I've just moved to the Manchester area and would be grateful for some advice on Climbing Clubs, best areas etc. I really need a club with some good climbers in it not full of weekend walkers...I said WALKERS! I'm currently leading 6a (E3/E4) but want to push this a bit further this year and need someone to drag me up a few things.

James Youngman 25 Jul 2003
In reply to Dave F:

If you're near Wilmslow, then the Roaches might be a good choice.

In reply to Dave F:

Lancashire caving and climbing club are quite active though most of them couldn't climb out of a paper bag, they do have a couple of decent climbers.

Were do you live that's the crux to the matter the Manchester area is huge .

Seriously, we had a lovely evening, tho i'm red and blotchy from the Midges.

Bloody Hell! Another one! And I always thought Wilmslow was a climber exclusion zone.

In reply to Dave F: http://www.kara... this mancheter club was brought to my attention today. Don't know anything about their climbing pedegree but they will no doubt have climbers who can push your grade, or improve with you.
Dave F 25 Jul 2003
In reply to Dave F: Cheers for that everybody...a great help. Have we got enough people to start the Wilmslow C.C.???

Off down Broughton wall tonight!!
chris tan 25 Jul 2003

Is that Rock climbing or social climbing?
Dave F 25 Jul 2003
In reply to chris tan: Both, it's always better that way! You need a good drinking partner when the rain is bouncing off the ground!

I went into SOS (now part of Brighams empire) on Deansgate and asked if they knew of any local clubs and now 31 years later i'm still in the Karabiner MC. We have a hut in Wales and meet at the Crown & Anchor, Hilton St. give it a go!

In reply to Mark Tolver: One of the Lancashire Climbing and Caving Club stalwarts also lives in Wilmslow - but he's unlikely to drag you up anything unless it's big and snowy.

If we have a Wilmslow CC can we get our shoes from Cellini's and our club tops from Garbos?

And I'm not climbing anything that means i might break a nail!

In reply to Alison Bond: As long as we meet every other Thursday in The Brazz in Alderley Edge...I've never seen so many Mercs in one car park!!
Alison Bond 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Dave F:
I plan to hang out there a lot more in the hopes of meeting my future husband. I'd like a Merc.

The Stratstones garage is outside my window and right now i can see 6 Aston Martins, 4 Beamer Z3's and a coupla those little Porsches. And a Landrover that i think has never been further afield than Bollington, not quite sure why you need 4WD in Cheshire?

How come more climbers don't have fancy cars? is it cause they spend all their money on shiny gear and rubber?
 BAM 29 Jul 2003
In reply to iain johnson:
> (In reply to cubanallstar) theres also marple wall

Yes there is, but dont go there. They hardly ever seem to clean the holds on the bouldering wall, the routes are pretty crap and to piss you off even more you have to pay a rediculous amount to get in.

Two words: Broughton Power
 cubanallstar 29 Jul 2003
In reply to BAM: Broughton baby all the way! Went the other day for a couple of hours God ive missed that place! Shouldnt you be playing with chemicals and atoms or what ever BAM?! and how is geneva anyway?!

In reply to Dave F:

Speaking of Manchester, Didsbury has to be the best place to live. Good bars, restaurants, even a cheesy club. Good access to motorway too

I spend a lot of time there, anyone else reside there

In reply to Adam Lincoln: i think you will find that chorlton is probably superior...
Punter Hitch 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Adam Lincoln:

I live just up the road in Heaton Moor

Didsbury (I lived there for a number of years) is good if you want night life but it is conspicuously expensive
Punter Hitch 29 Jul 2003
In reply to paul hesketh:

chorlton is full of champagne socialists and hippies.

Alison Bond 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Adam Lincoln:

I used to do the majority of my socialising in Didsbury (sitting on the balcony of Via Vita with a jug of cocktails or any one of many beer gardens) but i've noticed that recently it was becoming more and more full of scallies and morons. The student element were always slightly annoying but at least they were lively and well dressed, i'm sick of seeing gangs of lads who've come in on the bus from Wythenshawe skooting aroung looking for something to nick. On saying that, Wilmslow's not much better, even more pretentious and less choice (plus no-where to dance. I do not count the Braz, Dave!)

I've not been to Chorlton since i was at school but i remember walking past the Green and smelling the 'Fragrant' air, and i rememeber going to Jackson's Boat cause it was one of the few places where they would serve underaged drinkers.

So what's a girl to do? Grit your teeth and go to town, avoid Deansgate, and Piccadilly and don't talk to strangers. TriBeCa's nice, Sankeys, Big Hands, The Phoenix if you're dirty... or head out to a nice country pub for a change
 Adam Lincoln 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Alison Bond:

Oh, i dont know, aslong as you avoid the food in the clock tower, which at best is bad. Instead, taking in the delights of Gemini, which you may not have had the pleasure of, if you havent been for a while. Also La Tasca, hmmh, thats got the taste buds watering

The pubs are, certainly lively but never really full of scallies. Certainly not in the Slug and Lettuce and anything else up that way...

Like you say though, avoid Deansgate, as its full of pretentous(sp?) w@nkers!
 cubanallstar 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Adam Lincoln: Live down the road from Chorlton but not really been on a night out there Went to the polar bar Twas ok but nowt special Really like Didsbury village tho just a bit of a trek from my current residence The Met in west didsburys nice as well, Summer evening on the grass glass of shiraz ...Beauty! Noticed since all the students have gone home manchesters riddled with scallies at night M8 works at revolution on the locks and he said last week the bouncers turned down over 300 people ...Unwelcomes! Worked a tad at si hudsons bar in withington called pleasure for a bit whilst i was skint and after the exams and the students went it just got full of scalls in the evening, all sat outside drinking rum and coke!
Alison Bond 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Adam Lincoln:

I think the problem with Didsbury is that it's gotten choked up with big brand chains. Used to be a nice selection of old mans pubs like the Royal Oak and the Crown, and some nice bars and independant restaurants (Like Casa Tapas which is far superior to La Tasca)

And now they're getting squeezed out by Pitchers and Piano's and Est x3 and Pizza Express etc.

I just liked it better pre 1999, and the sun shone more then too!!

The other problem i've noticed with Didsbury as a place (not just for going out) is that it feels 'full up'. It's hard to explain, but so many of those gracious old houses on Barlow Moor Road have been converted into flats, and others knocked down to build more flats that it feels like you're fighting all the time for a parking space.

On saying all that, there are some Gems. The breakfast at Saints and Scholars can cure any hangovers, Greens does the best Veggie food in South Manchester and the Botanical Gardens are lovely for a picnic, maybe it's just that i'm a bit old to be going out there any more.

Where do you reckon the 'Next' Didsbury is going to be then? Someone told me Levenshulme but i can't see it myself. I reckon Wythenshawe is on its uppers, once the tram gets built (!)
Alison Bond 29 Jul 2003
In reply to cubanallstar:
I like Polar Bar, it's not too pretentious, and while you're right in that it's nothing special, it's nothing horible either and they don't rip you off for a G&T

Have you tried the Nose in Withington recently?

 Adam Lincoln 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Alison Bond:
Not sure myself, but the tram will go through Didsbury, which may drive a lot of the people on nights out into the centre more. Which, might be a good thing, we shall see
Mark Tolver 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Adam Lincoln:

I work near Wilmslow but live in Didsbury on School Lane, about 30 seconds walk from the Pitcher and Piano. Went to Casa Tapas last night for the first time, which was pretty good. For pubs tho', you def can't beat The Metropolitan in West Didsbury.
Anyway, what the hell are you doing over this way so much Mr. Lincoln?
 Adam Lincoln 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Mark Tolver:

Err, well, its in the interests of a certain lady. We where in Casa Tapas on Sunday night, very nice!

Nah! I reckon it'll be Fallowfield, it's got all the bars and is right on the road into town. Lots of life and it'll attract all the young professional/ex-graduate first time buyers who lived there as students. Then the students'll get forced out as the house prices get pushed up.

Have you tried the cafe in west didsbury by the way? Does a brilliant and pretty cheap cooked breakfast.
Mark Tolver 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Adam Lincoln:

Ah, I see.. actually, a certain someone suggested going to the salsa classes they do there :/ Not sure how good an idea it is tho', I'd probably end up destroying the place!

 Adam Lincoln 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Mark Tolver:
Dodgy pubs though, how rough is the orange grove!

Revolution however oert road is proper bo, reet good. Great cocktail jugs for a tenner to.
Alison Bond 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Mark Tolver:
I've done a Salsa Class at Casa Tapas, and while there was no destruction, it's pretty hard to concetrate on your feet and your hips and your hands and your head after too many jugs of their Sangria and a belly full of albondigas!

Good night out, take your lady!
Mark Tolver 29 Jul 2003
In reply to BAM:

Ay up fella! How was the bouldering comp the other weekend? Didn't make it up to chamonix in the end by the way, stayed in Ailefroide then went down to Ceuse - brilliant crag - pain in the arse walk in tho'!

Sofa's not bad either. There's a good but very small bar tucked away round the corner from Sofa too, can't remember the name of it off me head tho'.
Mark Tolver 29 Jul 2003

Oh god, I'll have to now. It'll end up being proper carnage tho'.

The nose is west didsbury, along lapwing lane by the metropolitan.
 cubanallstar 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Hel: Ah yeah I know the one! Not been but m8 went with his g'friend and rated it pretty highly Looks pretty swanky Ne1 been?
Alison Bond 29 Jul 2003
In reply to cubanallstar:
Me! go there for lunch (lovely dips and pitta in a basket) and even lovelier dinners.

And a very extensive wine list.

It's well priced and not too snooty but really tasty and quite interesting food

(p.s. am sorry for how off topic this has gone, however it is possible to boulder up the side of Saints and Scholars if yr still interested in climbing in Manchester!)
 BAM 29 Jul 2003
In reply to cubanallstar:

I used to to the nose quite a bit, they did pretty good soup and breakfasts, It's been practically rebuilt now and has gone all ponsey and modern, they've also added about 30% to all the prices, and it was expensive to start with. It's now about twice as big and called something else. Bit of a shame really.

I suppose you can afford it now though since you've got this high flying IT job!

By the way, ainscough said you bight be coming over to the alps. What are your plans?

I know what you mean, La Tasca in Didsbury is excellent, I once saw that ex barmaid from coronation street (the one that was in soldier soldier) in there!

The staff are really friendly, the deansgate version is not nearly as good though.
Dave F 29 Jul 2003
In reply to Alison Bond: All I wanted to do was spend a quiet evening climbing in the famous quarries around Manchester...but so far all I've done is eat in the finest restaurants, get pissed on Deansgate and have spent all my money on an Aston Martin!!!! Anyway...I'm not bothered about climbing anymore, I've met a real toffy blonde bird and we're moving to Alderly Edge next week!!

Hi Mark, Glad you had a good trip and you survived your glacier treck, I was back in Ailefroide at the weekend, it was just as hot there as before. You missed out on a great weekend in Tralenta but it sounds like a trip to Ceuse isn't a bad alternative.

Probably see you at broughton in the winter!

I'm not sure what we'll do, ainscough is coming so we'll check out Ailefroide, tralenta and maybe do some easy multi pitch stuff as rest days from bouldering.

sleeping on the ground under boulders probably unless that's too scruffy for posh ainscough. You can get a shower in the campsite at ailefroide for 1 euro. Maybe si will bring that stupid wigwam from cotswolds
