Saw this, and thought it's very underhand way to do business, so thought I'd flag it up to users on here:

It is dodgy as sin. Imagine walking down the street to find your face selling Viagra or incontinence pads.

How is it underhand? Has Instagram not notified all users of the change?

A deadline only a month away, with no opt-out if the deadline is missed?
The lawyers would have a field day on that one.
But the proposal will be explained away as an unforeseen consequence of some other benign change, and the wording will be rewritten.

I believe that there's a law against that sort of thing.

I think that you are right. Instagram does have the right to license your images if they so wish and they make it obvious that this is the case, but no professional outfit would risk using an image of a person without a model release form - you still own your likeness unless you have given permission for it to be used.

Yep. Depends how you define "use". I have a feeling that this is more to do with profiling e.g. lots of Instagram pics of someone camping = target that someone with camping-related advertising.

People are letting their imaginations run riot here with fantasies of their 800*600 oversaturated fun snapshots somehow being blown up to huge billboards advertising a Pol Pot theme park or something.

I'm currently in negotiation with them to offer up my entire catalogue of Instagrammed pictures of Eric the Cat up for nefarious purposes.

Are all your pets called Eric?

In reply to balmybaldwin: i find it shocking especially when all the people i know who have illegally downloaded images, music films and software make a point of letting their victims know a good month before doing so. It's kinda the same thing! We've made our beds...
