Interesting to me that on two recent postings someone assumed that the Sella referred to was in Spain, and that the Sentinel and Route Major were in Scotland. Is this indicative of the way the mountaineering scene has changed?

Not really, though it reflects the international nature of the internet and even UKC.

Maybe the change is that someone would think it OK to ask invisible strangers for rack advice for a major route on Mont Blanc in winter. A common response used to be "if you need to ask then you shouldn't be trying it" but that seems unfashionable now.
