Anyone know what's going on with the moon tonight? Looks amazing. Has a huge halo around it from where i'm located (North West England. This halo is white now but was red earlier. Looks amazing anyway.

In reply to Sebastian Fontleroy:

Saw a huge halo round the moon last night, as I walked back from my sister's house to my mum's house, probably about 10pm

I've also noted that there was one bright "star" quite close to the moon

And that, and your post, made me realise that I haven't got Stellarium installed on my current laptop

Just installing that now...

In folklore it can also mean bad omens, different colours mean different things. Red is bad, blue good. Green is unusual (and very very bad), if memory serves me right

That bright star is in fact Jupiter.

halo indicates very high level thin cloud in advance of a depression.

In reply to Sebastian Fontleroy: that's interesting, the halo was visible from where I am as well (south coast) I was thinking it would be a fairly localised event, obviously not!
