Headed to the Lakes this weekend with my missus and looks as if it could be cold with a dusting of snow. Before children, she's joined me on numerous scrambling weekends and a few climbs - but very little winter stuff. Anyone got any suggestions for routes to do at around a Scottish grade 1 sort of level. Also - she's never done Jacks Rake - what's this likely to be like? Any suggestions - much appreciated.

I've not been up high recently but looking at Fairfield from Ambleside and there's barely any snow left up there

Health warning. The following comments are from experience NOT having been on the fells during the last week.

I would suspect Jacks Rake will be largely stripped as its low and south facing.

There will be snow on north through to east facing aspects - the view from Ambleside of Fairfield can often be deceiving as you are looking at a southerly aspect - it's not unusual to find good winter nick in the Lakes when there is no snow on theses slopes.

In your situation I'd go for the Helvellyn edges - Saturday looks good.

In reply to Will Legon: I was in Langdale yesterday afternoon, Pavey Ark was looking snow free, likely it'll be a summer scramble unless we have overnight snow. And it's a very good summer scramble.

In reply to Will Legon: Lots of snow cover still across the north side of the Helvellyn Range...

It's cold today, and due to get colder overnight and tomorrow. I'd be wary about ice on Jack's Rake, especially for a newbie.

I'm intrigued what you mean by Helvellyn edges?

In reply to adamleedsuk:

Striding Edge and Swirral Edge as a horse shoe walk / scramble.

Got ya, I thought I was missing something!
In reply to adamleedsuk: I'm guessing they mean Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, the classic grade I winter ridge round of the Lakes. A good option if there's fresh snow (though watch the exit slope from Striding Edge onto Helvellyn if it's potentially avalanchey). A good option any time in fact.

In reply to Will Legon: I was about to suggest this route to you anyway, given your situation
