Two of use are planning a two week trip to the alps from 4th july to 18th july. We want to start in the Ecrins then maybe move to chamonix. Flights to Turin look could value with BA but car rental from Turin is expensive. If anyone is looking for a lift from turin to the ecrins they could pay a similar amount to public transport (about 40 each and this would help us cut into the cost of rental) there would also be the possibility of moving on to Chamonix with us and perhaps using the car around the ecrins as a passenger.
Let me know if this fits with your plans

In reply to islandlynx: try pricing up easyjet to Geneva(always found it cheap) also europcar for car hire then it would leave you with a shortish hop back from Chamonix at the end of your trip. apologies if you have already considered this

in the past have accessed the Ecrins via Turin, Geneva, Marseille & Grenoble.....but the last 2 winters have flown into Lyon....i think flights are pretty cheap there and i found the car hire pretty reasonable with europcar. it only adds an hour or so compared to coming via grenoble (which doesn't seem to have summer flights these days).

In reply to islandlynx: You could also look at Eurostar to Lyon or Grenoble. There's no weight restriction.

In reply to islandlynx: I use the train for this, and can do it within a day easily. TGV from paris to Oulx (on the line to Milan) then bus to Briancon and hire a car at the station Europcar. Or Paris-Briancon on the night train. About 180 return, which is about what the taxi costs from Turin alone. But the timing only really works if you are starting in London.
