Hi,

I've been climbing a bit over a year indoors (top-rope only) and have managed up to 6b but I've not tried any real rock yet. I'm looking for some ideas to get onto some rock when the weather improves.

I was looking at perhaps the Rock and Sun intro to rock course (any opinions on Wye Valley vs. Swanage?). I can't seem to find many other companies offering this sort of course - are there any other recommendations for people doing rock intro nearish to London?.

And would it be a good idea to do an indoor lead climb course before going outside?

Cheers, Barry.

In reply to BarrySW19: The cheapest and many would say the best way to learn to climb is to join a club.

In reply to BarrySW19: I could thoroughly recommend Swanage if you could get someone to hold your hand. If he is down from North Wales I would again recommend Jezb1 from this site - he has his own website and is a top bloke and really knows his stuff.
Also he is quite often down at Swanage doing beginner courses and the like (as he used to live in Swanage).

Good luck and once you get outside you'll never look back.

Ps it would help to populate your profile.

In reply to BarrySW19: Jez has also got some spaces on courses down at Swanage - have a look

Another recommendation to join a club - particularly useful if you are in London as it will help with petrol costs.

Get straight into trad, as this is where the best climbing in the uk is, and there is plenty of well protected climbing at reasonable grades.

You can find local clubs using the BMC map, although it appears not to be working for me at the moment?

There is also a list of clubs here:

Have you seen these great opportunities on the BMC website?
