In an effort to find a camera that the children can't nick and break, I am going to buy a phone which is also a camera. Recommendations please.

I am a skinflint. Also, I'm always losing bits. Therefore a phone/camera that I'm not too desolated to lose is a good idea. If I can do this for under £50, that's a Jawohl from me.

Suggest away then please.

(On the other hand, I also want it to take reasonable photos, especially of climbing routes. Some people are never satisfied.)

Anyone?

In reply to Tim Chappell:

There's a Sony one from about 4 years ago that was highly regarded as a camera. Might find one for around £80 - £100. I can't remember the name - I was looking for one myself a few months ago but decided to go for a cheap Android, which has an appalling camera on it.

In reply to Tim Chappell:

The Nokia 5800 has quite a good camera on it. Pretty old school by today's standards, but you could probably pick up a very cheap one now.

In reply to Fraser:

Ha, I took one of favourite 12 pics of 2011 on one of those

In reply to Blue Straggler:

That's a strange couple of stats to remember!

In reply to Fraser:

Nah, each year I go through my shots and pick out 12 favourites. With the 5800 I took this beauty. Cartier-Bresson eat your heart out. Ermm...

In reply to Fraser:

I don't think the 5800 is particularly good btw. The phone is resilient though. I don't think they go that cheapy

In reply to Blue Straggler:

Ah, I see. I got the phone for free a few years ago when I renewed my cheap mobile bundle so I assumed the phone itself was cheap. (I've never used it myself but my wife has taken lots of very good shots with it, considering it's a phone!)

In reply to Tim Chappell: I have used a nokia n8 since released. I still swap sims from note 2. It may have an outdated operating system, but all the apps are there, full offline sat nav and all leads included. Even if you forget the 12 megapixel part. The usability (specialised button) and connectivity made it for me it. I can send you a couple of test shots if you wish. Or visit gsmarena.com for full test. Oh it also has a xenon flash fm transmitter, usb on the go and hdmi socket. So you can plug it into hd tv and control with a mouse etc

In reply to Blue Straggler:
I had a sony ericsson w995 which was fairly similar to the c905 and also took v good pics despite being aimed at music as well as the camera. I think my bro had a c905 but lost it. A good alternative. Cant cost more than £30 second hand now surely??

Thanks Big Man. I only understood a few words of that, but picture me as nodding frantically

In reply to Tim Chappell: I'll put it another way, I rarely carry my canon g9
 woolsack 22 Apr 2013
In reply to Tim Chappell: The N8 also has HD video. The whole camera part of that phone is very good
 Alex Slipchuk 23 Apr 2013
In reply to woolsack: ro take picrure you press button, don't have to touch screen.

In reply to Tim Chappell:

Is that 50 quid cash to buy the phone, or 50 quid plus a two-year mobile contract at some outrageous monthly fee?
 BusyLizzie 26 Apr 2013
In reply to Tim Chappell: My phone takes pictures. Sadly, neither I nor even my teenagers can work out how to get pictures from it on to the computer.

(No no no, nobody tell me how to do it, please. I have evolved to cope,)
