This is a good book and have a shop around online for best price ;

http://www.rockfax.com/climbing-guides/books/trad-climbing/

there is a sport plus version too which covers the essentials for sport climbing .

I'm in a similar situation to you and recently bought Malcolm Creasey's The Complete Guide to Rock Climbing which I highly recommend. Even though it's ten years old it covers everything you need to know with lots of colour photographs. I read it every day.

In reply to streetfighterjeff: Alun Richardson's Rock Climbing for Instructors is really good, as is Libby Peters' Rock Climbing Essentials.
