I have 25mm worth of spacers above my stem, it's starting to look a little silly I think. Do you think I should trim the steerer?

In reply to Richard Carter:

If you think you'll never need to raise your stem again - yes.

In reply to Richard Carter:

Ok next question. How much steerer do you think I should leave above the stem. I'm thinking maybe 15mm? Or possibly even go down to 10mm maybe.

I guess it's not critical, just for aesthetic purposes :-P

Richard, slam it! The neck pain goes away soon.

In reply to Enty: but in accordance to certain carbon steerers you should leave a minimum of 5mm so it reduces the risk of the carbon fraying or breaking.

In reply to sleavesley: http://www.trekbikes.com/pdf/carbon_care/10TK_Carbon_Steerer_Info.pdf granted this is for trek but same applies to other makes. If you slam no warranty for forks.

Rule 45 states:

A maximum stack height of 2cm is allowed below the stem and a single 5mm spacer must always – always – be stacked above. A “slammed down” stack height is preferable; meaning that the stem is positioned directly on the top race of the headset.

I must admit that on my mountain bike I also have 25mm of spacers, though this is purely down to laziness, I've never bothered to cut the steerer in the 4 years since I built the bike. Mountain bikes aren't covered by the rules though.
