I was really keen for Manaslu in November as it looks stunning and I thought we could trek independently, staying in lodges as well as carrying a tent for some sections and sidetrips. However I've heard that Manaslu is no longer the tranquil haven it once was, the “new Annapurna Circuit” and it's now obligatory to trek with a guide and you can't get a permit without one...

Is this true?! Anyone any recent experience?

It was always like that, requiring special permit and guide, except previously when it was totally restricted. That's why it was a 'tranquil haven'. Lodges are rarely tranquil.

Thanks too for the guide info. Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations / contacts? Would rather organise things ourselves than join an organised trek.
