Well it looks v like the west face of the Matterhorn on the far left, suggesting that this wasn't Zematt at all but eg. some mountain near Arolla ? ? ?

My first thought was that it must have been taken looking due south into Italy from somewhere on the frontier as the clouds in the distance seem to be over the Italian plains. Also, there don't seem to be any instantly recognisable big mountains which would be evident if you were looking in any other direction.... maybe!?

In reply to Gordon Stainforth:

Well that's not a bad idea Gordon. That would make the darker/closer mountains things like Chateau des Dames etc and around the Valcournera, which would fit. But does it really look like the Matterhorn? The rough shape is certainly there, but the proportions seem wrong. And where is the Dent d'Herens, which would appear much whiter from that angle than the mountain that's to the right of the Matterhorn?
In reply to jon:

Well, here are a couple of pix of the Matterhorn from the west, with the very distinctive Italian shoulder:

I know he tried to climb the Matterhorn but got turned back, I though this may have been on it somewhere but it could well have been a different day / trip....
In reply to retrorob:

Well, the immediate foreground and middle distance doesn't look anything like surroundings the Matterhorn.

In reply to retrorob: I reckon it's somewhere near the Brittania hut or Felskinn lift / Allalinhorn, looking SE towards Italy.

I'll get some proof...

In reply to psaunders: Here's how I think it matches up: http://i39.tinypic.com/2m3hjd5.jpg

The snow patches on the Sonnighorn are quite distinctive. I haven't got quite the right angle on Google Earth but I would guess the picture was taken from somewhere around the Allalinhorn or the Strahlhorn.

Comments / criticisms welcome!

Wow, great skills!

Brilliant. That's certainly very convincing! So looking E or even ESE? You'd still see the clouds in the distance over the plains/lakes.

Seriously impressed gents, surpassed my expectations! I'll see if I can jog my dads memory with some of the detail above to get an exact location....

Genuinely grateful.
