Anyone recommend a short walk or easy scramble in the Grasmere / Langdale area that can be done in half a day?

Much appreciated.

stickle tarn, jacks rake, pavey ark
In reply to An Triubhas: Jack's Rake is the obvious half day outing and for an even shorter day Helm Crag would be good

Is Jacks Rake best in a b1 boot or normal walking boots?

Whatever you are comfortable in. In weather like today, approach shoes would be my choice.

What, and decide at the base of the route?

If the gill is low enough it's worth scrambling up that as well. Saves the long slog up the countless steps. Much more interesting.

It's not that hard. I have seen dogs coming down it before now.

If you're planning on Jack's Rake, do it via a boulder hop up Stickle Ghyll (as recommended above) and then traverse right onto Tarn Crag and take in one of the scrambles there. Plenty to go at. Classic route is The Groove at III, but the lines on the right rib are also worth a look at an easy II ish. You can then top out, drop down to Stickle Tarn and then do the Rake.

Makes for a more interesting day out and definitely possible in a long half day.

Depends what you're comfortable with. I'd normally choose fell running shoes these days; but in many places it's unforgiving of a slip, people die on it.
