What animated movies are worth a punt for a big kid such as myself?

Toy Story, tick
Shreck, tick
Despicable me, tick
Braveheart, tick

kung-foo panda, bag of poo

So, what animation feel good aminations should I check out?

I'm not after some animation aimed squarely at rug-rats.

Thanks muchly

Are you saying Mel Gibson's acting was a bit two-dimensional?
 Blue Straggler 19 Oct 2013
In reply to The Lemming:

Paranorman is superb.

And you should check out some Hayao Miyazaki. I think for your tastes, the best would be Laputa The Flying Island (which may be titled Castle in the Sky on the current re-release DVD), Howl's Moving Castle, and the much older Castle of Cagliostro. Good English-language dubs exist for all of these.

I cannot believe no one has mentioned any Ghibli films. In vague order of quality. But they're all good.

Laputa - Castle in the Sky
My Neighbour Totoro
Nausica Valley of the Wind (yeah technically not, but feh)
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Howls Moving Castle
Spirited Away

If you want to cry shed loads just watch Grave of the Fireflies.

I did. Plus a non-Ghibli Miyazaki.

I don't think The Lemming would like Kiki, Totoro, Spirited Away etc so I tailored my recommendations.

Read threads properly in future.

Ice Age
Madagascar (and the spin off short cartoons, Penguins of Madagascar)

Not necessarily for The Lemming who doesn't do subtitles (dyslexia issue). Is there a good English-language dub of that one?
 Blue Straggler 19 Oct 2013
In reply to The Lemming:

The 1950s British animated film adaptation of George Orwell's allegorical novel "Animal Farm" is pretty good - bit full-on at the end and not for kids.

From my experience of similar threads like this from The Lemming, he tends to utterly ignore all suggestions of anything more than about 5 years old. I've never quite got to the bottom of that one....

By blue ray version has English voice over, not that there's any significant spoken dialogue

I am pretty sure this whole thread has been done before. The Lemming is quite forgetful. He likes to think threads are fresh, having not realised they are repeats.

And you'd be fairly well advised not to try smarm and sarcasm with me, unless you up your game considerably.

Have we had

Akira
Patlabour
Ghost in the Shell

yet?
Or are they too grown up (at least '15's)?

Full Metal Alchemist is also good, if you have a bit more time to spend (and can find a dubbed version)

Thank you to those that kept to the spirit of the OP and offered some good suggestions.

I started the evening off with Despicable Me 2. It was good, but like all sequals, not as good as the first.

I shall download a few.

Loads of sequels are better than the first.
Superman II, for instance.
Not sure if I can think of an ANIMATION example, in fairness. But then it is late. I bet there are plenty.

Are you sure you don't just mean "Miyazaki"? Some non-Miyazake Ghibli stuff is a bit grim! In fact I thought Miyazaki's adaptation of Howl's Moving Castle was a bit much at times...but I am a sensitive soul

I'll throw Barefoot Gen (both parts) into the mix (to be ignored because they are from the 70s)
 Shani 20 Oct 2013
In reply to The Lemming:

Another shout for the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli output such as Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke.

Coraline is another superb (and seasonal) kid's film with adult appeal.

If you are into Japanese anime try 'Devil May Cry' on Netflix. Stylised and violent.
 Choss 20 Oct 2013
In reply to Blue Straggler:

Fair Point.

For feel good thinking Whisper of the Heart, kiki, cat returns, Spirited away, ponyo, naussica, totoro

I Know Others have Suggested some of Those not Jennings thing. But if enough people Recommend them, may Try them and like them.

If you like naussica, which can be a tad dark as well as feelgood, Try origins as well

In reply to The Lemming:

I'd second the suggestions of

The Incredibles
Monsters Vs Aliens
How to Train Your Dragon
Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury
Chicken Run

The two "Train your Dragon" films are excellent, saw the (short 22min, video only) Gift of the Night Fury on the BBC earlier this year I think, and went and ordered How To Train Your Dragon immediately afterwards.

I disagree with you on Kung Fu Panda, but don't left that put you off the Dragon films...

(although KFP2 is a bit pants)
