After recently formatting my laptop back to the same as it was when I first bought it I'm now unable to update windows service pack. I need sp3 for a couple of programs I want to install.

I'm tearing my hair out here, please help

If windows update doesn't work, you could try downloading the install package from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=24

though it would be a good idea to fix windows update if you can, installing every patch by hand would be a nightmare. Do you get an error number when you visit update.microsoft.com ?

Also, bear in mind that support for windows XP ends in spring, no more patches or hot-fixes after that, so make sure you have a good anti-virus and keep it up to date.

Hmmm. Googling around that error number I think the problem might be changes to the windows update system which made it slightly incompatible with older versions of windows (which is pretty retarded when you think about it).

If I were in your position I would download and install these two, in this order, then try again.
SP3: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24
IE8: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx

The first one in particular is big, it will download quite a lot when you run it. Watch out if you're on broadband with limited downloads.

If it is pre SP1a (SP1 or less), then you'll need SP1a or SP2 before you can install SP3.
