I'm looking for a word or phrase to group some things together...

I want a word for by products or side effects of a bit of machinery that are released as part of normal operation:

So a list may include waste heat, vibration, noise, fumes etc.

I'm sure that I've seen a blanket term for this sort of thing in the past but I can't think what it is and Google hasn't helped!

Thanks

In reply to jonoh:
It is in the context of a pre-purchase check-list for buying laboratory equipment; heading are currently:

Dimensions (will it fit through the door)
Services required (Do I need to hire a plumber)
Environmental Conditions (Does it need to be in a frictionless vacuum)
IT (Can I watch youtube on it)
and Other (Vibration, EMI, noise, radiation, fumes and other stuff)

In reply to Reach>Talent: In that context would environmental pollution / pollutants be a viable phrase ?

By-Product; side-effect?

In reply to Reach>Talent: From this publication , page 5 suggests safety hazards

Hope it helps

In reply to Reach>Talent:

If you're looking in a global context, the term "Environmental Insults" might be applicable if you're looking at the environmental effect of waste byproducts and emissions.

Don't think that's the right on an individual machine level though, more applicable to a whole plant or industry.

The best that I can come up with is 'Incidental outputs'

Agreed

In reply to Blue Straggler:

I find it hard to consider vibration to be an emission.

Perhaps 'Incidental emissions and characteristics'

That is pretty good as a description but I am pretty sure here is a single word that does it. Unfortunately unless anyone has eaten a thesaurus recently then I may well be stumped as it definitely isn't a common word!

"Other"

'transient effects'?

I have a form hat has a box for "Consistent with environmental policy" which is ticked once any problems are run past the HS&E guy.

Effusions?

Outflow?

discharge?

Effluvium?

Miscellaneous (heat, vibration, noise, fumes or other) effects

Keep it vague to cover stuff you haven't thought of

Luddite... machines are a disease eh?
 Dave Garnett 30 Oct 2013
In reply to Offwidth:

I think the original meaning is broader than the more usual pathological use, and it would raise the tone anyway!
 nniff 31 Oct 2013
In reply to Dave Garnett:

I can picture the conversation in the design department of the machine manufacturer:

'Ey up youth. Will our machine work with this new Sequelae software they want? Never heard of it, me'.

I was told that "F#ckwittery" wasn't a suitable term for SOPs so I doubt "shite" would be acceptable.

Well it isn't the word I was looking for, but it is a good one. You've made it into the first draft!

I am writing one and there is a load of fiddly text and diagrams that has taken AGES to put together and that could - genuinely - simply be replaced with "fanny around with different combinations of these numbers until you get something that makes sense"
