Any typophiles in the room? Can you identify this typeface? I think it's a Didone or Scotch Roman of some description, but it's rather taller and more condensed than the Scotch Roman I'm familiar with. The style is fairly common in early 19th century books.

Do you want to identify the original font, or find a modern font you can use to recreate it?

If the latter, Century FB Condensed Bold?

Apparently it was designed in 1906 and was very popular for American newspaper headlines - so I don't suppose it could have been the exact font used in a 19th century book.

(I cheated, and uploaded your picture here: http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ )

Wow - great site, I didn't know it existed!

I'd like to know both, really, although I'm aware that early 19th century typefaces weren't standardised and tended to be unique to each type foundry or publisher. Century FB Condensed Bold looks like a decent representation. I tried artificially stretching Scotch Roman and it didn't look quite right.

Thanks!
