Having just come back from a trip to Germany, I am determined to improve my German. I couldn't believe how many Germans I spoke to who had picked up English "watching tv"

So, does anyone know a good online web love film type service that offers lots of German language movies with English subtitles?

You might well get a variety of answers to that one...

I suspect 'Doppelfaust 3' isn't what you have in mind.

Sorry, don't know a service, but will recommend a film :

The Nasty Girl (Das schreckliche Mädchen) 1990

I watched it on Youtube.
In reply to Ridge: Subtitles aren't needed, the plots don't tend to revolve around subtle dialogue!

You might find that films are hard to follow, full of idioms, strange, unguessable ideas and and mumbled dialogue. Try easier stuff like TV news or radio, where you have an idea of what they are talking about, or websites of German newspapers, where you can read stories you have an inkling about already from their appearance on english language news outlets.

Apps like Tunein radio will get you German stations, and youtube must have loads of extracts from German TV that will be easier to follow than most films. Watch some cheesey chat show host interview some celebrity or pop band, say, and you don't need subtitles. Moreover, if there is any subject you know about, try to find a TV clip on that topic. You will likely be able to guess at what they are talking about.

In reply to Kemics: Bear in mind that sometimes the subtitles are shit. I watch Russian films with English subtitles. I don't think it's particularly useful tbh. It either just passes me be or I spot errors in the translation.

Much better to talk to Germans on Skype, especially if they're keen to learn English. Try My Language Exchange.

Das Boot would be a good start.and enjoyable too.

Alternatively ;

'Anal Sluts From Hell 5' has a surprisingly sophisticated dialogue.

The german equivalent of netflix.

I think its called HerrFlix.
In reply to Kemics:

A good option might be one of the German TV detective series. Could do worse than a box set of Tatort Muenster (there's versions of Tatort for lots of German cities so if there's a city you've been to you might prefer that to Muenster. http://tatort-fans.de/

Try dw.de - its a multilingual news / radio / tv site designed for learning German. I've been using it for the last few weeks and its pretty good.

In reply to Kemics: Nordwand is originally in German and not too bad. Also you probably know the story ( first accent of Eiger north face ).
 Blinder 07 Nov 2013
In reply to Blinder: this might also be of interest 7 part series about Air Zermatt ( some of the dialog is in Vallies German ( which is impossible to understand) but good none the less: http://feeds.sf.tv/podcast/diebergretter

My advice is to watch the film in German, with German subtitles. If you put on English subtitles, you end up just reading the subtitles, but if the German subtitles are on, it means if you don't catch a word then you can check it, but it removes the temptation to just read. If the subtitles are in English, then it's even harder to find a word you didn't quite hear, firstly because the translation might not quite match, and secondly because the word order is so different.

Suggestions of films that I like in German would be Das Boot and Sophie Scholl. Depends if you're interested in war films or not, I guess!

Downfall

Another vote for Das Boot

Both excellent

In reply to Kemics:

There is more to german movies than the odd WWII flick, btw.
Das Boot is of course great though.

Look for "Knocking on heaven's door" with Til Schweiger and Jan-Josef Liefers
(Liefers also plays one of the main characters in ther Muenster Tatort)
Or try anything with Moritz Bleibtreu.

A popular streaming site used to be Kinox.to, not sure if it's just scam nowadays.

I am from germany and learned a good deal of my english from just reading english articles on websites or wikipedia for example.

Don't know if it's on a web service, but The Lives of Others is a German film that I thought was brilliant.

That one! Definetly.

I second Tom's suggestion of Tatort. Very famous Sunday evening show. Often deals with current issues in Germany as well, so an added bonus there. You can watch them for a week on http://www.ardmediathek.de/sendung/tatort?documentId=602916 with subtitles.

Anything by Werner Herzog (if you can Stand it)

yes (obv) to Das Boot, Der Untergang and Das Leben der Anderen (for another side of this also watch Good Bye Lenin!). To these I'd add Die Wiel (the rise of National Socialism: couldn't happen again, could it?) and Lola Rennt

In reply to Kemics: oh, and Das Himmel Uber Berlin, if you can get hold of the German version

The Wave
In reply to Tall Clare: Agreed! Also good, vaguely similar, is Bader Meinhof Complex about the 70s terrorist faction.

Agreed - one of the best films I've seen in about the last five years.

The great classic Herzog is Aguirre, the Wrath of God.

Yes, i agree. Wonderfully shot, with Klaus kinski on top manic form.

I quite Like Herzog, but added if you can Stand it, because i Know people who would rather poke their eyes out than Sit through another Herzog film.

 ripper 07 Nov 2013
In reply to Choss: Aguirre is one of my favourite films but I found sitting through Cobra Verde to be quite an ordeal...

Another German classic, shown to many school students of my vintage in its English translation as 'Christiane F', is 'Wir Kinder Vom Bahnhof Zoo'. Just say no, kids!

'The Edukators' is worth a watch too.

Same actress who was in Sophie Scholl.

And one of the actors ,Daniel Bruhl,is now fairly well established on the big screen.

Was in Inglorious Basterds ,and one of the Bourne films ,and more recently ,played Niki Lauda in'Rush'

Heimat

The fourth is running in cinemas now (at least in the Hunsrück - was doing good business in Simmern a couple of weeks back) The first one is very good indeed.

Only problem - not able to pick up the subtleties, but I think some of the dialogue is in dialect. This would be less of a problem in the Munich set second film/series.

Marvelous!

I would second the idea of Youtube...search for stuff where people are vlogging about some pet subject or other, so there's a fairly narrow range of ideas and the vocabulary etc. is quite focused. I do this for Spanish which I find quite useful for keeping it fresh and also staying in tune with the accent and pronunciation

As others have said The Lives of Others is an incredibly good film and is available on Netflix as is Downfall incidentally.
