In reply to harold walmsley: Just seen this now, the area meetings keep passing me by. Is it because I don't use facebook much? Martin Kocsis used to email me, so I could decide whether I wanted to attend or not.

In reply to Mark Collins:
Hi Mark,
We discussed this at tonights area meeting, as we had a poor attendance. Martin did an excellent job of mailing people prior to an Area meeting. However, this was stopped as some BMC members complained that they were being "spammed" too much by the BMC.
The next meeting will be in Feb, and will be in the Bolton Area, and there should be plenty of interesting issues to be discussed!!
We could ask people present if they want a "local" database, that a secretary and chair could hold, and then send out a global mail to all on the list, if NW area Members want this?
I am also keen on any other views you and other NW members may have on increasing attendances at meetings
Cheers

Hi Nick,
Thanks for responding and yes I would be interested in receiving email about these meetings in the future. I'll keep an eye out in February and hope I can make the meeting.

Kind Regards,

Mark

Yes, I only saw this on Sunday, by which time I had made other plans.

I have been checking the BMC website every month or so, and for a long time there was no meeting planned.

I'd be happy to be emailed as well.

You could also try posting on ukbouldering, as discussed at the meeting earlier this year.

Ukclimbing has a big audience, but this sort of post usually disappears fairly quickly without being seen by many people.

Do you use facebook or twitter?

In reply to astley007: The mailing list was pretty successful when Martin sent it out. I appreciate that one or two complain, but surely it isn't that hard to remove them from the list? I have noticed that area meetings in the last few years have often only been announced with a few days notice and no agenda. If you want people to come, they need to know what is in store. Also, do you still offer chips and sandwiches> Always a winner several years ago.

Good luck!

Moff still emails for the Peak area: if members dont want these email they tell her and she removes them from the mailing list.

At the moment, when known, area meeting dates are published on:

In this article (always the same url): https://www.thebmc.co.uk/upcoming-bmc-area-meetings

Here on the Community site: http://community.thebmc.co.uk/

Here on UKC

On the main BMC Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BritishMountaineeringCouncil

On the Area Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BMCNorthWestArea?

On Twitter @team_bmc

In the main BMC email newsletter, sent once a month

We trialled a system on http://community.thebmc.co.uk/ where you could sign up to an area group and receive updates, but it didn't get well used.

We're probably unlikely to go back to Martin's Mass eMail, since this involved emailing everyone in an area and the number of complaints was too high.

Tony here at the BMC office helps with all this, so email tony@thebmc.co.uk if anything else is worth trying, or if you're involved in an area and need to make sure all these bases are covered.

Looking at the area Facebook page, the meeting doesn't look like it's on there, so maybe needs a local Facebooker to become admin on it if there are any volunteers.

Cheers, Alex.

Yes, I had been checking the second one, but for several months it simply said "no meeting to display".

As offwidth said, it's easy enough to be removed from these mailing lists, and this can be made clear in the email. It seems like this is what people are asking for, might be worth another go?

All the areas can log in to the Community Site to update their details, so it might just have been that the meeting date wasn't known very far in advance.

It'd be simple to set up a NW area mailing list for people that supply their email addresses at the meeting or online, but we can't do the mass mail again, the number of abuse complaints was too high.

Up to NW team to decide really, then let tony@thebmc.co.uk know what they need.

Cheers

Alex.

She should look at the Data Protection Act. The Office is probably compliant with maintaining the list of addresses, but I'm not sure she would be.

In reply to Kipper:
Explain exactly how given the individuals volunteered their names for just such a list, the full list is not visible (bcc) to the recipiants and moff will remove them if required.
