Ben Bransby has climbed Parthian Shot at Burbage in the Peak District, making the first lead of the route after the breaking of a crucial hold two years ago.

This famous route was graded E9 until the crucial 'shipwreck' flake was broken off in a fall by visiting Canadian climber Will Stanhope.

Waddage Ben. Not a route for shorties before, let alone now.

For clarification only the upper portion of the "shipwreck flake" broke and as I understand it was more a loss in terms of its utility as a handhold rather than for gear. The lower remaining part still takes gear.

Big news.

Yeah, from the photo it looks like the left hand rope has gear in the flake. Can't quite see where the right hand rope goes / does. He doesn't look attached to it.

Top effort Ben

In reply to UKC News: He is very high up on the photo of his presumed failed ground up attempt from a few years ago.

Wonder how he got off that; lob or rescue?

Good effort to make his recent ascent.

I thought it added to the atmosphere actually! Awesome film though.

That looked pretty intense! Well done that man.

Does anyone know what purpose the second (sideways acting) rope serves?

Mike.

In reply to Otis:

The route traverse out from the neighboring easy thing. Caff and Ben placed a highish side runner in the easy thing in the hope that it might catch them if they fell off lower down. As far as i know there was never any hope that it'd be of use in a fall from the top.

In reply to spidermonkey09:

Agree that it added to the atmosphere, but I was gripped watching and nearly fell off of my chair when the dog started!

I doubt Ben minded as Clem is usually at all his hard ascents, and usually barks encouragement.

Excellent- that top out footage is the best I've seen in ages. Properly pant filling. That rope being in the way while he was trying to sort his feet out- horrific!
