I am not after a dogs danglies technical garment, but something to wear around town, down the wall or at a crag without worring if I get caught in a passing shower.

My main requirement is that it has to be cheaper than a down jacket. It does not need to be waterproof but it must be warm.

Cheers muchly

Rab Generator or the Montane Prism, both have Primaloft insulation and have a Pertex shell. Insulation and shell on both garments are highly water resistant.

just bought an ME K7 for an Austrian trip which means I have an ME Himal for sale, you can have it for £110, saves me advertising on ebay for more than that.
The Himal was new in May this year but I did not know I was going to Austria then, it has a 1500 hydraphobic head.

not being picky but i believe the term is 'hydrostatic' (hydrophobic is a different property), and 1500 isnt much - neoshell is considered borderline weatherproof and its a 14,000 hydrostatic head.

not havin a go, just clarifying to help with a sale.

This is more of a sign that hydrostatic head is not a good measure for weatherproofness, rather than 1500mm HH being too low to be adequate. My tent's groundsheet as a 10000mm HH, and it does an excellent job of keeping water out even when the ground is saturated and I'm placing a fair amount of weight on the fabric in the form of my arse.

Decathlon do a good one but it's not always listed online. Not a heavyweight winter jacket but quilted to about 40mm thickness, warm and nicely made for the money.

Yes they are excellent! See the other posts on this belay jacket discussion which is very similar to this post! http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=568761

In reply to PN82: Quick question on the Simond jacket - is the hood wired or stiffened in any way?

In reply to More-On: Helmet compatible and wired!

i agree. i think the poster simply left a 0 off, but yes, i agree HH is only part of the equation.

Does it only have one colour?

Yes but the poster was looking for:

- “something to wear around town down the wall or at a crag without worring if I get caught in a passing shower” - --- >>“it has to be cheaper than a down jacket” <<

The Rab neoshell is a rain jacket & at least £200, that price did not seem to be something the poster was after

Hydrostatic head , some explanation links

These values should be taken with some caveats. Rain room tests show that some fabrics with less than 1,000 mm of water resistance keep water out sufficiently for practical purposes. Garments made from these fabrics tested in the Leeds University Rain Room show no signs of leakage after 4 hours of simulated rain five times heavier than heavy British rain. However, some garments made from fabrics that exceed 20 000 mm have leaked through zips, hoods, and seams. Pressure may not be a good measure for rainwear, as the force of the rain drop on the fabric also depends on how much the fabric moves; it is a good measure for sitting on wet ground or similar situations. In addition, the breathability of nearly all waterproof/breathable fabrics is very dependent upon weather conditions, especially temperature and humidity.

For an old chap wallking in the rain with his dog for 2 hours, his jeans looked quite dry.

While I am off work next week, I shall pop down to my local Decathlon in Bolton.

Sadly those orange jackets are not available in the store, so what should I look out for while I am there?

Cheers muchly

That decathalon jacket looks good. Does anyone have one and happen to be 6'2" with long arms and can recommend sizing?

Have a look on the two other similar topics, I've tried to answer the same question I've also added pics for some comparison
In reply to The Lemming:

You can order them to be delivered to the store, without committing to buy. At least that's what I did recently. They also honoured the price at time of request, as, by the time the item arrived, the sale had ended. I'm assuming this is a group-wide policy, and not local to my store.

Just to add to the options for a cheap synthetic jacket. I bought one of these today-

http://www.mckinley.eu/apparel-jackets--vests-insulated--padded-jacket-cand...

£49 from intersport in Inverness.

They had them in black or 'petrol blue'.

Excuse the McKinley website it is absolute crap. Jacket seems well made, has 100 weight primaloft, hood is helmet compatible, adjustae and removable (no wired peak though), 2 hip pockets, 1 chest pocket, internal mesh glove pocket, internal stuff sack/pocket (packs to bag of sugar size).

Sizing- I'm 6'2", gibbon arms & long body and the xxl fits well. Had to make a slight compromise for body fit versus length and arms but not too much. Certainly better for for me than Patagonia, montane, ME, TNF etc etc that I tried on today (haglofs seemed a good tall persons option, but for that money it may be cheaper to just get your arms surgically shortened).

Haven't been out in it obviously but seems warm just stood about outside (2deg) and a strong rival for the Simond budget belay jacket.

I haven't got Flickr or anything but if anyone wants any photos, message me your email address and I'll send you some.

In reply to Dave 88:

Just as a note, for a garment to be clased as waterproof it needs a hydrostatic head of 1500mm with all seams taped. so for a jacket that isn't taped seams 1500mm is cool, as the jackert gets older and the stitching stretches, especially across the shoulders etc water will seep in eventually. Anything over 10,000mm hydro is good and plenty to be honest but isn't going to be used on a jacket like this becuase there is no point unless they tape the seams but that adds a lot of cost.

Primaloft one, ykk zips, under hlemet hood, not over unfortunately but i was looking at an arc'teryx one today which was the same so can't be too bad an idea. 3000mm HH. The green is lovely too.
