Are fans of the Doctor enjoying the special programming auntie has laid on then? An adventure in space and time was great I thought, my old man remembers Hartnells first Doctor well. Apart from watching an old film or two I don't remember Hartnell or Troughton with Jon Pertwee being my 'first Doctor' and seeing my first regeneration into Tom Baker. Pertwee is remembered more for being Worzel Gumage than the Doctor if truth be told!
Your top 5 then?
First Doctor - Jon Pertwee
Fave monster - The sea devils
Fave Doctor - Christopher Eccleston (bit of a strange one as he only did one series but he marked the birth of a new age of Doctor Who and regenerated the whole series allowing it to actually reach 50 years)
Fave companion - Kylie! (Xmas special, I touched the actual maids outfit she wore at the DW xpo at Earls court, sad or what?!)
Fave spin off - The Sarah Jane adventures

Lets have your top 5 then and dont forget the 50 anniversary special tonight kids!

1st Doctor - Jon Pertwee although I do remember watching Patrick Troughton
Fave Monster - Weeping Angels
Fave Doctor - David Tennant
Fave Companion - Billie Piper (I thought she brought the pathos of being a human companion to a time lord very well)
Spin Off - Torchwood
 Duncan Bourne 23 Nov 2013
In reply to wilkie14c:

Jon Pertwee - I remember Hartnell & Troughton but was too scared to watch them
The Master
David Tennant - Though Christopher Eccelstone is a close runner
Romana or Clara hard to decide
Doctor Who and the Daleks - for kitsch 60's comedy value

Off to see it on the big screen later

Got to admit that all the Doctors before Christopher Eccleston, did not really inspire me. Admittedly, there wasn't much on telly back then to compete with Dr Who but it never really floated my boat in the way Blake 7 did.

Saying all that, I got hooked from the moment Christopher Eccleston took on the role of The Doctor and none have come near his dark sinister talents. I only took a shine to the new doctor with the chemistry between him and Clare.

She purty and knocks River into second place.

Hopefully the Spin Doctor will rival Christopher when he takes on the role next year.

> First Doctor - Not sure about this, I remember many of them but must have watched repeats because there's no way I can remember Pertwee really because I'm only 31. I think my first may have been McCoy but could have been Davidson.

> Fave monster - I think this is a tie between darleks and weeping angels. the angels are terrifying now as an adult.

> Fave Doctor - Eccleston. The best moment ever in Dr Who is him describing to Rose what it's like to be aware of the earth spinning as it moves in the solar system which is moving through the galaxy.

> Fave companion - Ace, I bloody fancied her.

> Fave spin off - Torchwood.

I'm very excited about tonight and I really enjoyed the trip through the doctors provided by Aunty.

I've only seen a few Dr Who episodes in the last 30 odd years so it would be hard to judge !

I have, however, always loved 'The Horns of Nemon' - it's SO bad, that it's brilliant ! Especially where one of the bad guys falls down and splits his trousers ! The special-effects are mind-numbing !

70's teenage-actor Simon Gipps-Kent provides some eye-candy, had quite a crush on him !

 Fat Bumbly2 23 Nov 2013

First Doctor; William Hartnell
Fave monster; "midges" - from the library one
Fave Doctor: Tom Baker
Fave Companion, Jo Grant
Fave spin off: Tonight's Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Peter Davidson thing

There might be a thread all about the episode tonight, but i haven't spotted it - so here's a daft question:

Was Peter Capaldi actually in it? I'd read he was going to be.

Are we allowed to have Peter Cushing as a favourite doctor (and Roy Castle or Bernard Cribbins for companion)? I liked those films.

Cribbins' undercover work here is wonderful

First Doctor - Tom Baker
Fave Monster - The Master as in The Deadly Assasin (not John Simm)
Fave Doctor - Tom Baker
Fave Companion - Leela
Fave Spin Off - Sarah Jane Adventures

50th anniversary special was f*ckin ace, thanks for the reminder.
 deepsoup 24 Nov 2013
In reply to wilkie14c:

First - Jon Pertwee

Fave monster - Um.. Not really a monster, but I loved the creepiness of the "Are you my mummy?" gas mask people.

Fave doctor: I think Christopher Eccleston may have been slightly better even than Tom Baker. (How lovely that he got a cameo in the 50th anniversary thingamabob. Still got it.

Fave companion: If Sally Sparrow doesn't count as a companion, Leela.

Fave Spin-off. Have there been more than Torchwood and the Sarah Jane thing? I don't have a favourite, but Sarah Jane was quite good and Torchwood was garbage so it's a no-brainer.

That has to be the best Dr Who episode, EVER!

Just got through watching it on Catchup TV.

I have one question to ask and it is annoying me. What is the ditty that accompanies the entrance to Clara?

I know that its an Irish folk song, but I just can't put a finger on the tune.

Aforementioned "K-9 And Friends" and two feature films with Peter Cushing

Do the films count?
If so I'll go with them. :O)

No idea how old I was but I remember watching a repeat of "Daleks Invasion Earth" on the telly when I was little and being scared witless. (Particularly by the Daleks' spaceship, which looking back on it was a cross between a flying saucer and a giant Mark 1 Transit van.)

Strictly speaking, sadly I'd have to say no. They are a "version" rather than a spin-off. A spin-off usually has to have a more direct link to source.

Was one the bernard cribbins B&W film where the darlecks invaded london and everyone hid in the underground like they did in the blitz?
They couldn't get away with that now as most underground stations have disabled access

I think you're right. The character Peter Cushing played wasn't really the Doctor, he was human.

In reply to deepsoup:

Not being a Whovian I can't be sure, but at the time of the second story in which the Daleks appeared for the first time had it actually been said that he was not human? Time Lords were a later embroidery of the series and the Hammer version can't be criticised too much for that - it wasn't clear at the time whether the Dr and Susan were from another world literally or from a far distant future or human world.
