Are there any family therapists on here I might chat with?

I'm considering doing the training but would like to ask for advice before I commit.
Do you have any advice?
Is there anything I should know?
I meet the requirements to train but will be paying for it myself so anything to say?

I seem to remember that gribble is something related to that? Not sure if he is children or families?

Thanks, how did you find the work load for the Cert and intermediate level?

If it's anything like my wife's couple counselling you'll probably have to do a lot of work on yourself. Some people don't find this comfortable!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not worried about that but I also think it's one of the few therapy courses where personal therapy is not a requisite.

I think its changed a fair bit as I did this in mid 90's and the content and structure of the traing has changed a bit. The academic side was ok and from collegues i work with have said its ok (better if work is supporting you) in the more recent training they have completed. The harder part is the supervised practice....often in evening clinics and may inolve a fair bit of extra travel etc. We had someone travelli g 40 miles each way on top of their normal commute so it can be a bit draining depending on ones circumstances! The other thing to consider is job prospects....our 2 family therapists are in generic posts as band 7's and with budget cuts etc there is little chance of any career progression. Sadly another colleague who has completed level 1 and 2 has just been seconded into an IAPT post to do CBT training, she's a great clinician so a shame that she's going down that toute but there are more rospects in the cbt world!!

Thank you, I do worry a bit about jobs but there seem to be plenty of family therapists within CAMHS, I'm not sure how else to stay clinical and progress to band 7 and above.

Its certainly difficult to get to a 7 at the moment for most professions. Psychology have stitched it up for a while but i think the bubble is starting to burst on them (appropriately in my view). Our iapt trainees fancy their chances at staying on or getting a 7 but im not convinced they will. I foresee a move towards specialist or senior practitioners on 7's and most others on a 6....not sure its a good thing or not but it could give a career path thats fair and based on experience/competence/responsibility/training rather than professional group. Hard to predict at the moment though!

There seem to be plenty of psychotherapists also with career paths. I'm originally (until recently) from Adult services which had none of much that wasn't medical model. My eyes have been opened.

In reply to puppythedog:

Yep....camhs will give you more scope, especially if you're interested in therapy and systemic practice/ family therapy is standard everywhere in camhs.....although risk assessment etc takes up most of my time sadly! Virtually all of our camhs clinicians have done the family therapy cert and if wave 2 and 3 of iapt does roll out over the next 3 years there should be opportunities for decent fam therapy/interpersonal therapy courses fully funded and supported...

Thanks for your contribution. I don't know much about the IAPT in CAMHS, I have no time for the adult roll out of IAPT but understand that CAMHS is an entirely different program.

In reply to puppythedog:

No probs....always happy to offer views on camhs (as a camhs old lag)! Iapt is still iapt! Volume, throughput, simplistic thinking and politically motivated rhetoric! I also hate cbt as a global panacea! I'd better not start ranting about cbt though or i'll get agitated! Best wishes with whatever you choose...

In reply to abr1966:

Thanks, worrying about joining a rant I hate the mystification of therapy and the panacea nature of many proponents of a particular therapy. It's just CBT ists are better marketers they understood the commissioners wanted something measurable and which could be treated like a 'pill'.
