Hello,
There is a method of sterilizing water by leaving plastic bottles of untreated water out in the sun. This is popular in Africa. But need to ensure the bottles are made of the correct plastic. I guess it would be UV sterilization.
But......
Just been reading 'Himalaya by bike' by Laura Stone, and a comment in there regarding a transparent water bag is - keeping it OUT OF sunlight slows down algae growth. (1st edition p44)
A bit confused. Anyone have any knowledge on this?
As I understand it, it's intended to kill microbiological pathogens. I imagine that algae may not pose the same level of health threat, and this is what the SODIS FAQ says.
Sorry, to answer your question though, bacteria need a different set of life-giving things from algae, which is basically a plant. Plants thrive on sunlight, allowing them to perform photosynthesis
