A simple question to which I bet the answer is more complex than I think.

How do you get your photos off your DSLRS on to your computers? More specifically Canon DSLRs which use CF cards (Canon 5d's 1ds etc)

To give some context. I plug my 5dii via a USB cable. Then go through 'my computer' and open the Cameras folder as if it were an external hard drive. I then just copy and paste.

The problem is that 8/10 times the folder freezes and I cannot copy the files.

I've Googled but I must not be using the right words as nothing comes up.

So how do you do it?

Sandisk card reader, for Sandisk CF Cards, onto desktop, then just decide where to stash them on the Mac.

Have you got the EOS utility? Comes free with new EOS cameras. You could probably download it from Canon.

That's what I use.

Cheers all. No havnt got that software. Think I chucked the disk when I got the camera. Will look to down load.

CF card reader might be a good way around. It happens with both cards I have so I don't think it is the cards.

card reader all the way

1) it'll be faster if you buy a decent card reader... Lexar or sandisk
2) you don't risk damaging the USB connector on your camera
3) you can use a different card in the camera and carry on shooting

until you get one though try this

open the cameras fodler as you currently do

grab the first 20 files and copy them to the folder on your PC you want to store them. wait until that copy has finished, grab the next 20. repeat until they've all copied

but get a decent card reader would still be my suggestion

I used to do it with card reader. Now I'm lazy and use Lightroom import/copy onto hard drive straight from Camera (Canon DSLR). Much slower than USB3, but heyho.

Cheers.

Problem with the 20 grab system is that it freezes before I can grab 1 and most of the time if I do grab one it freezes anyway. Quite frustrating having to switch camera on and off until it works.

Long shot - but are you running latest camera firmware?

No it's quite old. Going through the update process now though.

But seems I need a CF card reader to transfer the update file on to camera.

Looks like I'm purchasing a card reader.

Cheers for the help guys.
