Rockfall in the Grand Couloir is bloody scary... surely I can't be the first to consider taking some sort of hard shell, perhaps a riot shield, up there with me?
Obviously I'm joking, and yes the 'you might die' aspect is all part of the adventure, but how ridiculous an idea is this? Surely some sort of shield on a pulley system could offer some reusable protection for those who want it?
Anyone got any thoughts on this? or even climbing safely in general?

Might be a case of 'If you can't take the heat...'

The French seem to be good at building tunnels in mountains, I'm surprised they haven't done it here.

Wow! Impressive stuff. That must be scary has hell. Certainly puts it in perspective when some of those rocks will have been bigger than a car. Weren't there a few parties on the Dru who were lucky to escape when the Bonatti Pillar decided to go for a walk one day?

We crossed it twice again this year, and it was effin' scary. Some of the blocks would have made short work of anything other than a paravalanche!
