I need some advice about which bike to buy as my first road bike. I have a budget of about 400. Any ideas much appreciated.

Don't get one, you will get crushed by a cement truck or beaten up by a white van man for 'not paying road tax'!

I've just bought a 2013 Giant Defy 4, it's a great bike although slightly over your budget at £500 (reduced from 600 at cycle surgery). It gets consistently good reviews in a lot of mags and on websites. I bought mine with the view of using it through the winter and them upgrading to 105 in the spring (2300 at the mo)

Be hard pushed to beat this. Tiagra groupset as well. A bit heavy at 10kg but what would you expect for this kind of money. Sure you could shave a bit of weight with decent wheels if you wanted.

search the forums, for that money you either go second hand on ebay or decathlon tribans which everyone loves.

In reply to Beat me to it!: mostly cycling to work. Which is about 15miles. Nothing over 40miles really.

Where are you? I have a 2010 giant defy I'm looking to sell. It's a mix of 105, tiagra and sora.
I bought it as my first road bike and now I'm running out of room for the growing collection of bikes!

+1 on this, a local bike shop that you can go back to and get to know is worth more than saving a few quid buying online.

My first bike was set u[p badly and put me off for ages.
