Good distance and speed for a beginner?

Having commuted on the bike for quite a while I have got a nice new road bike waiting for me in the new year. Building up to this I have been putting in some time on the commute (cyclocross) bike. At the mo I'm doing 50 to 60 km rides at the weekend and averaging 25 kmph, I'm also 17 plus stone and nearing 40. What were you all doing when you started out?

I wouldn't worry about your average speed at this stage, it can vary according to the terrain, road surface, weather. Build up your speed and distance gradually, don't try both at the same time. Also this time of year is more about building base mileage.
