Cor, I always thought it was BBC Radio composition (er, the little bit that was used as a famous theme tune, that is)

In reply to The Lemming: Doesn't the fact that it's played on a banjo rather undermine your assertion?

Plus, I can think of many better pieces which were actually composed for guitar. I'd nominate Davy Graham's Anji as an obvious example. It's certainly been covered many more times than JotS ever has, or is ever likely to be, which does rather suggest classic status.

Yep.

By all means, please post a youtube link for us to enjoy.

One year when I went to Ullapool, and it pissed it down as usual, I saw some bloke playing live guitar music. Turns out I have yet to see anybody play better live.

For your listening pleasure, I give you Colin Reid.

Is there some handicap stopping you from going to YouTube and typing:
Davy Graham Anji
into the search bar?

Tommy Emmanuel is everything that is wrong with guitar playing!
He needs a big slap in the face with a live salmon.

Well, I never realised that what I regarded as the theme to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was an Eagles' song

However, in terms of great "guitar" tunes there are several others...

Steve Vai's "Passion And Warfare" is a guitarist's classic instrumental album from 1990, and is till spoken of in "classic" terms nowadays as influential and a demonstration of guitar noise making and technique par excellence

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passion_and_warfare

There is almost certainly either live or straight from the album clips on youtube of every song on that album.

For starters, you might want to look at "for the love of god"

youtube.com/watch?v=okLDkcexiVg&

I also tried to listen to Satriani, but I just don't get on with him.

It was a revelation to be too when was an Art Student in the 80's.

Sublime piece of music. I love classical gas too.

If you've made your mind up why post asking for answers that you're clearly not interesting in? as it happens I find the rising repeating bridge like progression which first ends around 1.40 to be pretty cheesy and contrived.

Finding a better guitar tune than a track by the Eagles isn't too hard. Try anything by Link Wray. You did ask ..

In reply to The Lemming: Well now...

...though Steve Hackett is far from my favourite guitarist, and the bands he's been in aren't to my taste, his track 'Every Day' has a sublime piece of guitar work; which is just as well, as the rest of the tune is utter pants. There's a live version here youtube.com/watch?v=H1Nypeuk_lM& - if you want to get to the good stuff, skip to 2m 15s in.

can't do youtubes from work but I'm going to suggest Gordon giltrap's Heartsong.

For the aforementioned Steve Vai I'll point to dave lee roth's Eat em and smile - some superb 'musical' guitar work on there.
