The intro can be anything, but it has to be instantly recognisable, or within 2 seconds.

I was only referring to the first one. I think it is great and not low-credibility at all, Moroder is a legend, BUT the UKC forum posters tend to be testosterone-driven rocktastic "proper RAWK GUITAR" aficionados so I felt the need to put a deprecating disclaimer in there.

No, I think butterdfrog is right. Satisfaction is ingrained in the culture to a much greater degree. A far greater proportion of the population of the world (certainly of the western world) would instantly recognise those opening chords.

Nah, I hear what you're saying but I still think Gimme Shelter has a better intro than Satisfaction.
What the rest of the world recognise or not has never been of much interest to me in choosing music to listen to, recognisability was a requirement but the OP did ask for best intro ever.
In the absence of a correct answer being available, we'll have to agree to disagree I'm afraid.

So many to choose from but an all time favourite is Leftfield's Phat Planet. The intro is probably the most nails part of the song too. Also, Prodigy"s Break & Enter.

Gimmie Shelter also get's my vote!
 Fishmate 16 Dec 2013
In reply to The Lemming:
I reckon given todays market, half the worlds population wouldn't have a clue about anything listed above. I hate to say it but the most recognisable/best intro has be rooted in the pop genre?

Probably Kylie or Beyonce or something more pointless. How about (and not so pointless) Goldfinger, Shirley Bassey? All age groups, male and female buy into the Bond brand. Also, if you wanted to startle someone sleeping this would be a good tune to do it with.

For me - and its personal - it has to be the intro to 'Magic Bus' as captured on the Who Live at Leeds recording. Just a classic staccato build to the rest of the band.
