Ok I might be answering this myself already but I just wanted other peoples take on it,

I am 5'10" so general rule would suggest I should use a 17"-18" MTB frame.
However my inside leg is 32.5" and this equates to a 18"-19" MTB frame.
Now the frame I want comes in either 17" or 18.5"

which would you go for? and why?

adjustable via stem length and saddle hight, but ideally you want your knee 90% straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke, you able to sit on and try out or this an online order?

Unfortunately Online,,,,I have 3 bikes already
A 17" with a 22" top tube length
An 18" with a 21" top tube length and
A 17.5-18" with a top tube of 22"

the first one always felt small till I widened the bars and second one feels a tad big
third one is about right

I am sure I will be ok with a 17, just wish they did 17.5-18

yeah, 17, wide bars and a dropper, all you need to make you smile on the trails!

In reply to Matt Schwarz:

Yeah just checked all geom figures against my 3 bikes averages out that the 17" is actually a bigger bike than my 17" slightly so should be the one,

And yeah a smaller bike can be made bigger, easier than a big bike made smaller, if you follow

Dropper posts a must

Test ride, the frame size is only one measurement and doesn't take account your your leg length , torso length etc.

at 5.10 you won't be a large and you won't be a small, so you must be a medium.

The final fit can be sorted by tweaks to saddle, stem & bars.

Guess I was just getting twitchy about spending best part of 1K without trying it,
but as you correctly point out size is the medium be it what actual size is and can tweek from there

Thanks ALL for comments

I did the same recently and bought a bike without trying one out. Worked out great (large, I'm six foot). Not saying it wasn't stressful opening the box and trying it first time. There was a big phew moment for sure.
